Sun, 30 Apr 2006One of the great shifts in popular music over the last 35 years has been the decline in the importance of individual musicianship. Today, popular groups are rarely noted for their instrumental skills. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, the most influential rock groups tended to be so because they had the most skilled instrumentalists. The primary instrument in rock is the guitar, and the master guitarists of that era often made the reputation of the groups for which they played.
